VESTAL, N.Y. -- Alpha Dioubate scored in the 72nd minute, leading
Central Connecticut (3-2-0) to a 1-0 win over Binghamton (2-3-0)
in the opening round of the Binghamton Men's Soccer Invitational
on Friday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex. Earlier in the
evening, Albany defeated Rider 3-1 in the other first-round match.
Dioubate took advantage of a turnover deep on the Bearcats' side
of the field. The Binghamton defense was attempting to get the
ball back to sophomore goalkeeper Chris
Hayen but Dioubate intercepted the ball at the top of the
penalty box and fired it into the net.
Binghamton appeared to hold the upper hand in the first half,
outshooting Central Connecticut 5-3 and controlling the ball
for most of the first half. By the second half, however, the
chances were fewer and the Bearcats got off only one shot after
Dioubate's game-winner.
"Our guys are very disappointed with the outcome tonight,"
head coach Paul Marco said. "We need to regroup and come
out strong on Sunday."
Binghamton outshot the visiting Blue Devils 8-6.
Binghamton faces Rider at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday and Albany battles
Central Connecticut State at noon in the final round of the tournament.
