Men's soccer team beat Colgate 3-2 in preseason game; women lose 3-1

OXFORD, N.Y.--Senior forward Stephen Bruce (Buckie, Scotland) netted a pair of second-half goals, leading the Binghamton men's soccer team to a 3-2 win over Colgate at the Nice 'N Easy/ Coca Cola Collegiate Soccer Preview on Friday evening at the David L. Emerson Soccer Farm in Oxford, N.Y. In the women's game earlier in the day, Binghamton lost to Colgate 3-1.

Bruce broke a 1-1 tie in the second half with back-to-back goals that put Binghamton ahead to stay. The Red Raiders had a 1-0 lead in the first half before senior midfielder Charles Darkwah (Toronto, Ontario) tied up the contest just before halftime. Both Bruce and Darkwah were named second-team all-conference players in the America East last year.

Junior goalkeeper Stefan Gonet (Refrewshire, Scotland/ Trinity) played the entire game in goal.

After a scoreless first half in the women's game, the Red Raiders put Binghamton in a 2-0 hole to start the second half. Freshman forward Maria Krug (Norwich, Conn./Norwich) cut the deficit to 2-1 in the second half but Colgate got a late goal to ice the game.

The men's team opens up its 2004 season on Wednesday, Sept. 1 at Marist. The women team kicks off its season at home on Friday, Aug. 27 against Manhattan at 4 p.m.

NOTE: The men's team is scheduled to hold a scrimmage against the Woodbridge (Ontario) Strikers on Saturday, August 21 at noon at the West Gym Complex.
