Keith nets hat trick, Men's soccer tops Cornell 3-0 in front of record crowd
Sophomore scores three goals in Bearcat Sports Complex opener
VESTAL, N.Y. --Sophomore forward Cameron Keith (Aberdeenshire, Scotland) recorded his first career hat trick as a record crowd of 1,862 fans watched the men's soccer squad take down visiting Cornell, 3-0 in its inaugural game in the Bearcat Sports Complex on Saturday night.
Keith, who had yet to score this season, became the first Bearcat player to notch a hat trick in the Division-I era. The win improves BU's record to 7-2 overall, while Cornell falls to 5-3.
Midway through the first half, Keith opened up the scoring, volleying home a Justin Leskow (Endwell, N.Y.) cross from 12 feet out to put the Bearcats up 1-0 in the 21st minute.
The first-half tally would prove to be all the scoring Binghamton would need, as Bearcat sophomore goalkeeper Jason Stenta (Binghamton, N.Y.) played brilliantly, turning away four Cornell efforts to record his sixth shutout of the season.
The score stood that way until the 84th minute when junior Liam Carson (Broxburn, Scotland) played a ball down the left side to Keith, who beat a defender and pushed the ball to the far post past Cornell keeper Luca Cerretani to make it 2-0.
Just over two minutes later, he secured the rare hat trick as BU capitalized on a 3-on-1 offensive rush and Keith finished from eight yards out on assists from juniors Barry Neville (Glasgow, Scotland) and Cody Germain (Glenmont, N.Y.).
Cerretani finished six saves, as the Big Red racked-up 11 shots.
Binghamton opens America East Conference play against Boston University on Saturday at 7 p.m.
