Binghamton men's soccer falls 2-1 to Duquesne in season opener
MORGANTOWN, W.V.-- Matt Groves and Stefan Lundberg each netted goals, leading Duquesne (1-0-0) to a 2-1 win over Binghamton (0-1-0) in the opening round of the West Virginia Men's Soccer Tournament on Friday afternoon. The loss marks the second consecutive season that the Bearcats have lost to the Dukes in a non-conference tournament.
"Duquesne was good," head coach Paul Marco said. "They competed very well. They did all of the little things in the match to win. We played a very hungry team today."
Groves' goal was set up by Jeffery Drew, who got behind junior goalkeeper Jason Stenta. He then got a cross off to Groves who one-timed it into the net. The Dukes controlled play in the first half, outshooting the Bearcats 9-3 in the process.
After neither team could generate much offense during the first 20 minutes of the second half, Duquesne picked up the tempo and fired four shots in a four-minute span. The final shot by Lundberg came in the 68th minute, when he dribbled the ball to the top of the box. His shot deflected into the net, giving the Dukes an insurance goal.
Just one minute later, however, senior back Liam Carson trimmed the deficit to 2-1. After a Binghamton corner kick was knocked down by the goalkeeper, Carson got the loose ball and knocked it into the net.
The Bearcats, however, were unable to get another shot off the rest of the game.
Duquesne outshot Binghamton 14-5 for the game. Stenta finished the game with five saves.
Binghamton squares off against Lafayette on Sunday at 11 a.m. in the final round of the West Virginia Tournament.
