VESTAL, N.Y. - Ryan Pierce, a two-year starting back for the Binghamton men's soccer team from 2004-05, is currently a starting defender for the Harrisburg City Islanders of the United Soccer League. Through 13 games the City Islanders are 7-2-4 and Pierce has played the third most minutes on anyone on the squad.

On Wednesday night, however, Pierce and the City Islanders had perhaps their most memorable match of the year--a 1-0 upset over MLS powerhouse D.C. United in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup. In the 12-year history of the MLS, D.C. United has been the most successful franchise. It is has won the league title four times and advanced to the finals a total of five times.

The United Soccer League is one of four professional soccer leagues in the United States, along with MLS, the top professional league in the nation, U.S. Soccer and the United States Adult Soccer Association. The U.S. Open Cup is an annual event in which teams from all four leagues compete to determine a champion.

"Playing against such a soccer power as DC United is an honor and a great opportunity to show our skills and talents to a team at the highest level of soccer in the US," Pierce said earlier in the week. "We played D.C. in a exibition match in preseason and lost 3-0, so hopefully we can get a much better result on the 11th. This will be a great test personally to size myself up against the MLS players."

"We are extremely proud of Ryan's accomplishments in his rookie year (as a professional) and this opportunity is great for him and his team," Binghamton head coach Paul Marco said prior to the game against D.C. United. "I'll be at the game cheering him on with a few former Bearcats."

The United Soccer League consists of 23 professional teams in two divisions. The City Islanders are in the second division along with teams from Richmond , Charlotte, Cleveland, Western Massachusetts, Baltimore, Wilmington (N.C.), Cincinnati and Bermuda.

The City Islanders' game against D.C. United on Wednesday will take place at Hempfield High School in Greensburg, Pa. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
