men's soccer defeats Rider 1-0
nets game winner in 86th minute, Bearcats place third at home
VESTAL, N.Y. -- Senior midfielder Ryan
Walter scored in the 86th minute, leading Binghamton (3-3-0)
to a 1-0 win over Rider (1-5-0) in the final round of the Binghamton
Men's Soccer Tournament on Sunday at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
With the win, the Bearcats finish third overall in the event.
Earlier in the day, Albany clinched first place with a 2-0 win
over Central Connecticut.
Walter dribbled from the left of the goal. He fired a shot that
Rider goalkeeper Jason Giordano was unable to get a clean handle
on and went into the net. It was the Binghamton captain's first
goal of the season.
"We are delighted to get the win," head coach Paul
Marco said. "Especially after dropping our match on Friday.
It took a while to get the goal but it was a great strike by
Binghamton outshot Rider 11-10 but Giordano made six saves to
keep the game close. Sophomore Anthony
Sokalski, meanwhile, stopped three shots to record his first
Binghamton heads to Cornell on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. match.
NOTE: Walter and junior midfielder Trey
Jasenski were named to the all-tournament team for Binghamton,
as were Giordano and Brenden Noeges for Rider. Albany had the
Most Outstanding Player in Anthony DeSalvo, who finished the
tournament with a pair of goals. He was joined by teammates Adrian
Foncette, David Pinto and Quintel Gates. From Central Connecticut,
Anthony Occhialini, Mamoudou Dioubate and Reece Wilson were named
to the All-Tournament Team.
