Immediate Release: February 20, 2005 Contact: Thomas Moore II (sports@binghamton.edu) Phone: 607-777-2956 Tayla named Most Outstanding Rookie and Swimmer at AE Swimming & Diving Championships Binghamton men's swimmers finish in second place; women in seventh place Bearcats break 15 records in the three-day meet America East Day 1 Release America East Day 2 Release America East Day 3 Release Binghamton Press Day 1 Release Binghamton Press Day 2 Release BALTIMORE, Md.--Binghamton University freshman Kaan Tayla (Ankara, Turkey) received two awards, the men's Most Outstanding Swimmer and Most Outstanding Rookie, as men's and women's swimming and diving teams crowned four more winners on the final day of competition at the America East Championship on Saturday at UMBC Natatorium. Senior Robert Kaczynski (Tychy, Poland) was given the Coaches Award for scoring the most total points over the entire championship for his team. The men's swimmers racked up 193 more points to bring their total to 611 and finished second to defending champion UMBC (920). Binghamton was in front of Stony Brook (570), Boston University (489), New Hampshire (346) and Maine (323 points). On the women's side, the Bearcats tallied 52 more points to finish with 212 and behind New Hampshire (754), Northeastern (737), UMBC (502), Maine (413), Stony Brook (390.5) and Boston University (316.5). Binghamton placed ahead of Vermont (180 points). On the men's side, Binghamton's 400-yard free relay quartet of junior Wade Rimbach (Essex, England), Kaczynski, sophomore David Holmes (Doncaster, England) and Tayla touched in 3:04.45 breaking the conference and team records. The previous school record set in 2000-01 season by Aytac Gurbuz, Brien Wan Wagner, Tom Volper and Chris McGuire was 3:04.48. In the 100 free Tayla and Holmes took first (45.14) and second (45.72), respectively. Tayla broke his and McGuire's school record of 46.23, which tied earlier season. In the 200-yard breast, Kaczynski touched in 2:06.37 to win this event for the second year in a row. On the women's side, senior Huijue Cai (Shanghai, China) won the 100 free (52.14).
