Day 3 of America East Swimming & Diving Championships Complete
Binghamton men's swimmers in second place after third day of competition; women stand in seventh place

BOSTON, Mass.--The Binghamton University men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed in the third day of competition at the America East Championship on Saturday at the Fitness & Recreation Center. The men's team added 216.5 points to their total (485.5) and trail only UMBC (598). Binghamton is in front of Stony Brook (466), Boston University (316), Maine (255.5) and New Hampshire (120).

On the women's side, the Bearcats tallied 50 points on the day for 157.5 cumulative points and trail New Hampshire (498), UMBC (471), Boston University (388), Maine (284), Stony Brook (249.5) and Vermont (203).

On the men's side, sophomore Kaan Tayla (Ankara, Turkey) broke the school and conference records in the 200 free by touching in 1:37.59 for the win. This time also meets the NCAA 'B' provisional mark of 1:38.46. Freshman Brian Koralewski (Floral Park, N.Y.) finished in eighth place (1:45.48) in the event.

In the 100 fly, junior David Holmes (Doncaster, England) won the race in 48.95 breaking the conference and school records. Freshman Michael Popper (Lido Beach, N.Y.) touched in 55.43 for 16th place in the event. In the 100 back, junior Brian Koizim (White Plains, N.Y.) set the school record with a time of 51.71, he took second place in the event. Later in the meet he improved his school record in the first leg of the 400 medley relay touching in 51.36. Freshman Sean Lorenz (Norwich, N.Y.) finished in tenth place (53.58), while sophomore Michael Britvan (Pleasantville, N.Y.) placed 12th in the event (54.49). Sophomore Bryan Kwiatkowski (Garnerville, N.Y.) rounded out the Bearcats in the 100 back placing 15th (56.56).

In the 400 IM the Bearcats had six swimmers place in the top-15 places. Freshman Brenno Varanda (St. Petersburg, Fla.) won the event in 3:59.35, setting a new school record. Finishing behind Varanda was senior Wade Rimbach (Essex, England) in fourth (4:11.19), Lornez finished ninth (4:15.95) and sophomore Jason Lapp (Linwood, N.Y.) in 11th (4:19.26). Freshman Peter Rodrick (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) touched in 4:24.05 for 14th place, while Kwiatkowski finished behind him touching in 4:24.28.

In the 100 breast, sophomore Dylan Hobe (New Windsor, N.Y.) touched in 58.82 in a tie for seventh place, while freshman Andrew Palumbo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) finished ninth (59.98). In the three-meter dive freshman Ryan Graham (Vestal, N.Y.) placed third (434.95), while sophomore Matthew Russo (Manhattan, N.Y.) finished seventh (351.10).

In the 400 medley relay the quartet of Koizim, Varanda, Holmes and Tayla won the race in 3:20.67 setting the conference and school record.

On the women's side, senior Eden Payabyab (College Point, N.Y.) placed seventh with a time of 59.39 in the 100 fly, while freshman Heather Jennings (Ridge, N.Y.) finished in 14th in the 400 IM, touching in 4:46.84. Freshman Aleksandra Grubic (Split, Croatia) placed 14th in the 200 free (1:58.48), while senior Christine Carroll (Washingtonville, N.Y.) finished 12th in the 100 breast (1:08.87). In the 100 back, senior Nicole Fulgieri (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) touched in 1:02.29 for 14th place.

In the 400 medley relay the quartet of Fulgieri, Carroll, Payabyab and Grubic finished seventh touching in 4:04.97.

The schedule for Sunday is slated with prelims at 10 a.m. then finals at 5:30 p.m.
