Bearcats swept at home by St. Bonaventure
In their second home meet of the spring semester, both Binghamton swim teams were defeated by St. Bonaventure. The men's team (3-6) was defeated by the Bonnies (6-4) by a 154-84 margin, while the women (3-5) were defeated by St. Bonaventure (8-1) 144-97.
The women produced a pair of double-winners, as senior Yun Qu (Hangzhou, China) and junior Laura Linek (Canandaigua, N.Y.) each won two events. Qu touched first in the 1000 free (10:48.27) and also captured the 100 fly (58.13). Linek, normally a sprinter, swam the 500 free for the first time in her collegiate career, and won the race with a time of 5:17.73, more than three seconds ahead of the field. She also took the 200 free with a time of 1:56.92. The Bearcats benefited from the return of sophomore Huijue Cai (Shanghai, China), who did not swim in the first semester. She marked her return with a victory in the 50 free, touching in 25.51.
"Despite the loss, I was quite impressed with how we swam today," head coach Patrice Back said. "We are transitioning from some very hard training to the beginning of school, and we looked good all-around today. The women had some very good performances. It was great to see Laura win the 500 free for the first time."
On the men's side, senior Chris McGuire (Essex, England) was the lone double winner. McGuire was first in the 200 IM (1:56.79) as well as the 100 fly (52.41). In the 200 IM, he touched nearly six seconds ahead of the field, and missed setting a new pool record by less than half a second.
"Chris swam very well today," Back said. "I thought that he, along with Wade [Rimbach], Trevor [Stone] and Robert [Kaczynski] all had very good meets today."
Binghamton will visit Lafayette on Wednesday at 4 p.m. for a midweek matchup, before returning home next Saturday for its final home meet of the season. The Bearcats will host Colgate at noon.
