Varanda Named National College Swimmer of the Week
Third-year
Bearcat captured three-individual titles at league meet
College Swimming Release
VESTAL, N.Y. - Junior swimmer Brenno Varanda
(St. Petersburg, Fla.) earned CollegeSwimming.com's Division
I National Collegiate Swimmer of the Week (NCSW) honors, the
organization announced Wednesday.
Varanda turned in an outstanding performance at the 2008 America
East Championships capped off by his school-record breaking victory
in the 200-breast on the meet's final day of competition Sunday.
The 200-breast win came in a school- and meet-record time of
2:02.78 and made the Binghamton junior a perfect 3-for-3 in individual
events garnering America East Men's Most Outstanding Swimmer
honors for the first time in his career.
A Binghamton men's swimmer has now earned the conference's top
individual accolade in four consecutive years. Former BU swimmer
Kaan Tayla won the award in 2004-05 and '05-06, while 2006 graduate
and NCAA qualifer David Holmes won it at last year's meet.
His record-setting swim topped his own previous mark of 2:03.34
set at last year's championship meet. Varanda has now won both
the 200-breast and 400-IM events at three consecutive league
championships. In his three-year collegiate career, he has now
collected seven individual America East titles.
Led by Varanda, the Binghamton men finished in third place in
the five-team field with a total of 709 points.
