Day 1 Recap
LEWISBURG, Pa.-- The Binghamton men's swimming and diving
team continued its weekend dominance, capturing the Bucknell
Trial/Finals Invitational on Sunday at the Arthur D. Kinney Jr.
Natatorium. The Bearcats amassed 836 points to hold off host
Bucknell, which finished second in the five-team meet with 816
points.
On the women's side, despite finishing fifth in the five-team
field, BU concluded the weekend meet having established a total
of 30 individual personal-best times.
It
was a great meet on both sides," said head coach Sean Clark.
"We really got on a roll. There was a ton of Bearcat pride
on display."
After pacing the five-team field on Saturday, the men swept both
relays and captured five individual events to highlight Sunday's
action.
Senior David Holmes enjoyed yet another stellar afternoon,
setting a new school record to lead BU's 1-2 finish in the 400-yard
individual medley, stopping the clock at 3:56.79. Sophomore teammate
Brenno Varanda (St. Petersburg, Fla.) was next to touch,
coming in at 4:05.44. Varanda also posted a first-place finish
in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:06.41).
Holmes also met his second NCAA 'B' cut of the weekend with a
time of 44.55 to lead off the 400-yard freestyle relay for senior
Brian Koizim (White Plains, N.Y.), sophomore Brian
Koralewski (Floral Park, N.Y.), and freshman Philip Dzieniszewski
(Bayside, N.Y.), who teamed up to secure the meet-clinching
victory in 3:04.58.
Koizim swam a BU-record of 1:51.45 to win the 200-yard backstroke
in addition to a third place in the 100-yard fly in 51.45; less
than half a second behind senior teammate Trevor Stone
(Windsor, N.Y.), who touched in 50.94 seconds for the win.
In the three-meter board dive, sophomore Ryan Graham (Vestal,
N.Y.) took top honors with 267.15 points while junior Matt
Russo (Manhattan, N.Y.) finished in third (205.35).
For the women, sophomore Aleksandra Grubic (Split, Croatia)
and freshman Lindsay Wright (Johnson City, N.Y.) both
achieved ECAC 'A' cut times in the 100-yard freestyle, posting
ninth (54.21) and 11th-place finishes (54.41) respectively.
Freshman Allyce Brand (Highland Park, Ill.) was again
impressive, as she won the consolation final in the 200-yard
breaststroke in 2:30.90.
On the boards, freshman Anne Malvasi (Liverpool, N.Y.)
placed second in the three-meter dive (234.60).
The
Bearcats return to action on Saturday, December 2, when they
host Cornell in a dual meet at the Patricia A. Saunders Aquatic
Center.
Notes: Both the Bucknell and ODU men's teams swam at last
year's meet, each finishing ahead of BU. The Bearcats were fourth
of four teams at last year's invitational. |
