Men's swimming wins 15 of 16 races, women take 3rd
CORTLAND, N.Y.--The men's swimming team won 15 of 16 races to defeat Cortland 900-642 at the two-day Cortland Thanksgiving Invitational at Holsten Pool. On the women's side, the Bearcats finished third in the four-team event. Wagner took first with 725.5, followed by Cortland (483), Binghamton (406) and St. Francis (Pa.) (385.5).
"It was a good weekend. I am very excited with our accomplishments," head coach Patrice Back said. "It was great to tie the 100 freestyle record. It is something that Kaan (Tayla) has been very close to and it had just eluded him."
Freshman Kaan Tayla (Ankara, Turkey) was victorious with wins in the 50 free (21.68) and tying the 100 free mark set by Chris McGuire last season of 46.23. Sophomore David Holmes (Doncaster, England) won the 100 fly (51.96) and the 100 back (54.93). Junior Wade Rimbach (Essex, England) was triumphant in the 200 IM (2:02.24) as well as the 400 IM (4:22.08). Touching first for the Bearcats was junior K.C. Kozlowski (St. James, N.Y.) in the 200 free (1:51.00) and sophomore Trevor Stone (Windsor, N.Y.) in the 200 fly (2:02.52). Picking up their first collegiate individual victories was freshman Dylan Hobe (New Windsor, N.Y.) in 100 breast (1:04.47) and classmate Jason Lapp (Linwood, N.Y.) in the 200 breast (2:21.59).
On the women's side, senior Huijue Cai (Shanghai, China) won all three of her individual events, touching first in the 100 fly (57.39), the 100 free (53.82) and the 200 free (1:56.76). Senior diver Maureen Kirby (Syracuse, N.Y.) placed first on the one-meter board dive with a score of 300.65.
Binghamton has one meet remaining in the fall semester. Both the men's and women's teams will host Cornell on Wednesday December 1 at 5 p.m.
