Tayla makes NCAA "B" cut on first day of ECAC Championship

PITTSBURGH, Pa.--Binghamton University freshman Kaan Tayla (Ankara, Turkey) won the 50 in 20.16, making the NCAA "B" cut of 20.33 as members of the Binghamton men's and women's swim teams competed in the first day of competition at the ECAC Championship on Friday. The meet is being hosted by the University of Pittsburgh at Trees Pool. A full day of competition is on the slate for Saturday and Sunday, with competition starting both days at 10 a.m.

On Friday, the men scored a total of 72 points and were in ninth place among 20 teams. The Bearcats received 36 points in the 50 freestyle. Kaan received 20 points from his first place finish where he broke the ECAC record as well as the school record of 20.41 that he set last week in the America East Championship. Sophomore David Holmes (Doncaster, England) received 16 points for his third place finish in 20.88.

In the 200 free relay, Binghamton's quartet of sophomore Brian Koizim (White Plains, N.Y.), sophomore Trevor Stone (Windsor, N.Y.), Holmes and Tayla touched in 1:24.69 to break the school record of 1:24.98 set last week at the America East Championship.

On the women's side, senior Huijue Cai (Shanghai, China) placed ninth in the 50 free (24.47). The women stood in 19th place in the 22-team field with nine points.
