PITTSBURGH, Pa.--Binghamton University junior David
Holmes (Doncaster, England) won the 500 free in 4:24.96,
meeting the NCAA "B" provisional mark of 4:27.41 as
members of the Binghamton men's and women's swim teams competed
in the first day of competition at the ECAC Championship on Friday.
The meet is being hosted by the University of Pittsburgh at Trees
Pool. A full day of competition is on the slate for Saturday
and Sunday, with competition starting both days at 10 a.m.
On
Friday, the men scored a total of 152 points and are in first
place among 16 teams. The team placed first in four of the seven
men's events on the first day of the competition.
Holmes shaved almost nine seconds off Chris McGuire's school
record set in 2004 of 4:33.81 in the 500 free. Holmes was less
than nine tenths of a second off the ECAC record. Sophomore Kaan
Tayla (Ankara, Turkey) captured the 50 free in 20.11, breaking
his ECAC record from last season of 20.16.
The two men's relays teams won their events as well. In the 200
free relay, Tayla, freshman Brian
Koralewski (Floral Park, N.Y.), junior Brian
Koizim (White Plains, N.Y.) and Holmes set a school record
with a time of 1:23.11, breaking the school record set last weekend
in the America East Championship. The relay team was less than
a tenth of a second off the ECAC record. In the 400 medley relay,
Koizim, freshman Andrew
Palumbo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.), Holmes and Tayla won the
event in come-from-behind fashion. They finished in 3:24.30,
just under a one-half a second ahead of the Rider relay team,
who halfway through the relay was ahead of them by over three
seconds.
On
the women's side, freshman Katherine
Hassfurter (Horseheads, N.Y.) placed seventh (181.30) in
the three-meter dive. The women stand in 9th place with 50 points.
