PITTSBURGH, Pa.--Binghamton University junior David Holmes (Doncaster, England) was named ECAC Men's Swimmer of the Meet, as members of the Binghamton men's and women's swim teams competed in the second day of competition at the ECAC Championship on Saturday. The meet is being hosted by the University of Pittsburgh at Trees Pool. A full day of competition is on the slate for Sunday, with competition starting at 10 a.m.

"David definitely attacked his events," head coach Patrice Back said. "They were different events than the ones he swam at conference. This is a well deserved award. We are thrilled that he was recognized by other schools who do not really know of Binghamton."

On Saturday, the men scored 334 points over the three days to finish in sixth place, Johns Hopkins won the men's side with 541 points. Individually leading the way on day three for the Bearcats was junior David Holmes (Doncaster, England) who won the 100 free in 44.75, one-tenth of a second off the NCAA 'B' provisional mark. Classmate Brian Koizim (White Plains, N.Y.) placed fifth in the 200 back (1:52.42), less than one-half a second off his school record.

"For the men's team to come with a small group and get some best times and even a couple NCAA 'B' cuts is pretty impressive," Back said. "The atmosphere is not as electrifying as it is at the conference championship but we gave it our all and it showed."

In the one-meter dive freshman Ryan Graham (Vestal, N.Y.) placed seventh (210.40), while sophomore Matthew Russo (Manhattan, N.Y.) finished seventh (201.60). In the 400 free relay, freshman Brian Koralewski (Floral Park, N.Y.), sophomore Michael Britvan (Pleasantville, N.Y.), Koizim and Holmes won the event in 3:05.46. The quartet came back from almost two seconds down at the halfway point to win by just two-tenths of a second ahead of the Johns Hopkins relay team.

"Having three divers in the ECAC Championship for first time shows the progress of our program," Back said. "Our divers did a very nice job against some very tough competition."

On the women's side, senior Nicole Fulgieri (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) touched in 2:15.17 for 14th place in the 200 back, one-hundredth of a second ahead of Rider's Ericka Kriedel. In the 100 free, freshman Aleksandra Grubic (Split, Croatia) finished 16th with a time of 55.46. The women finished in ninth place with 108.5 points, Marist College won the women's side with 535.5 points.

"To finish ninth with only four swimmers who traveled with us is pretty incredible," Back said. "They swam just about every relay as well as their events to show how our women are stepping forward."
