Binghamton swimming and diving teams split dual meet at Lafayette
VESTAL, N.Y.-- Five different swimmers each won two individual events, as the Binghamton swimming & diving teams split a dual meet at Lafayette on Wednesday afternoon. The men (7-1) won 140-57 while the women were defeated 132-66.
"We've had two weeks of hard training but a lot of swimmers once again were (recording) their best times of the season," head coach Patrice Back said. "Lafayette should be right up there in the Patriot League, especially on the women's side, so this was a good challenge for us."
On the men's side, juniors David Holmes (Doncaster, England) and Brian Koizim (White Plains, N.Y.) and freshmen Brenno Varanda (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and Ryan Graham (Vestal, N.Y.) were all double winners. Holmes took top honors in the 100 (46.45) and the 1000 (9:37.08), Veranda won the 200 (1:49.95) and the 500 (4:51.91), Koizim captured the 50 (22.43) and 200 fly (2:00.54) and Graham swept the one and three-meter diving events with scores of 244.05 and 258.45 respectively. Binghamton's other individual winner was freshman Sean Lorenz (Norwich, N.Y.) in the 200 back (2:02.04).
Freshman Katherine Hassfurter (Horseheads, N.Y.) was the top Bearcat performer in the women's meet, sweeping the one and three-meter diving events with scores of 188.62 and 270.75 respectively. Other winners in the women's meet were freshman Aleksandra Grubic (Split, Croatia) in the 200 (2:00.84) and senior Christine Carroll (Washingtonville, N.Y.) in the 200 breast (2:41.89). Grubic was also part of the winning 400 free relay time, which clocked a time of 3:51.40.
The Bearcats return home to host St. Bonaventure on Saturday at 1 p.m.
