Qu Qualifies For Nationals, Bearcats Split Meet With Drexel

VESTAL, N.Y.--Junior swimmer Yun Qu (Hangzhou, China/ Shen Zhen Academy) became the first Binghamton University athlete to qualify for the NCAA Division I Championships in any sport today, by virtue of her times in the 200-yard butterfly event. She highlighted the Bearcats’ dual meet against Drexel at West Gym Pool today, a meet in which the women (4-2) emerged victorious 148-67.5 while the men (3-4) suffered in 142-91 setback.

Qu’s, who finished fourth for her native China in the 1996 Olympics in the 200 butterfly, swam her historic race today in the same event, posting a time of 1:58.99. In the process, she destroyed the automatic qualifying time of 1:59.83 for the NCAA Division I meet. When her time was posted on the scoreboard, Qu got a prolonged standing ovation from the near-capacity crowd.

“This is a great moment for out program,” said Binghamton head coach Benji DeMotte. “It’s nice that in our first year as a Division I program we can send an athlete to NCAAs. We just came back from a big training trip in Florida, so for Yun to do this after we pushed her so hard is incredible.”

“I am very happy with my performance,” said Qu. “I am very tired from the training trip and (Coach) said it was a gamble for me to swim without rest. I am very happy the team won and I am proud to be a part of it.”

Qu wasn’t done with her astonishing performances. In the leadoff leg of the 400 freestyle relay, she swam the 100 butterfly in a time of 55.63, meeting the NCAA Division I provisional time of 56.17. Because she already hit the automatic time in the 200 butterfly, Qu automatically qualifies for the 100 butterfly as well.

Also paving the way for Binghamton in the women’s meet was freshman Laura Linek (Canandaigua, N.Y.) won both the 50 and 100 freestyle, with times of 25.53 and 54.89 respectively. In the men’s meet, sophomore Chris McGuire (Essex, England/ Palmer VI Form) captured the 200 butterfly (1:55.59) and 200 breaststroke (2:11.14).

NOTE: The NCAA Division I women’s swimming & diving meet will be held March 21-23 in Austin, Texas.
