Binghamton swimming and diving teams split at Stony Brook
STONY BROOK, N.Y.-- Binghamton junior David Holmes (Doncaster, England), sophomore Kaan Tayla (Ankara, Turkey), and freshman Brenno Varanda (St. Petersburg, Fla.) all won two events as the Binghamton swimming & diving teams split with Stony Brook in a dual meet on Saturday afternoon at the University Pool. The men (9-2) won a close one 122-121, while the women (1-10) were defeated 155-81.
On the men's side, Binghamton won all five individual freestyle events. Tayla touched first in the 50 free (21.08) and the 100 free (46.20). Senior Wade Rimbach (Essex, England) was triumphant in the 200 free in 1:46.00, less than three tenths of a second ahead of Stony Brook's Nathan French. While Varanda won both the 500 free (4:47.05) and the 1000 free (10.01.09). Holmes won both the 200 fly (1:58.39) and the 200 IM in 1:53.54, more than six seconds faster than his next competitor (1:59.78).
On the women's side, sophomore Nicole Sweeney (Commack, N.Y.) was the top swimmer, finishing second in a pair of events. Sweeney touched second in the 1000 free (11:15.44) and the 200 fly (2:20.00). Freshman Aleksandra Grubic (Split, Croatia) placed second in the 200 free (1:59.46), less than a second behind the leader. Freshman Angela Zhu (Brooklyn, N.Y.) touched second in the 200 back (2:1842), while senior Christine Carroll (Washingtonville, N.Y.) finished second in the 200 breast (2:37.88). Freshman Katherine Hassfurter (Horseheads, N.Y.) was second in the one-meter dive with a score of 198.97, while junior Shelly Wax (Dix Hills, N.Y.) placed second in the three-meter dive (186.00).
The Bearcats are off next week before embarking on their biggest meet of the season, the America East Conference Championships, which will be held at Boston University on Feb. 16-19.
