Binghamton swimming & diving splits dual meet with Towson
Towson, Md.--Binghamton junior David Holmes (Doncaster, England) swam the 200 free in 1:39.46, breaking the school record of 1:40.84 set by teammate sophomore Kaan Tayla (Ankara Turkey) last season as the men's and women's swimming and diving teams split a dual meet against Towson on Saturday afternoon at the Burdick Pool. The men (3-0) won 150-91, while the women (1-2) were defeated 128-103.
On the men's side Holmes also finished first in the 100 fly (51.14). Freshman Brenno Varanda (St. Petersburg, Fla.) continued to his winning ways, taking first in both the 100 beast (1:00.06) and 1650 free (16:39.12). Also winning two events for the men was Tayla in both the 50 free (21.16) and the 100 free (46.18). The diving events were won by freshman Ryan Graham (Vestal, N.Y.) and sophomore Matthew Russo (Manhattan, N.Y.). Graham scored a 259.90 in the three-meter, while Russo scored 259.27.58 in the one-meter dive. Junior Brian Koizim (White Plains, N.Y.) won the 200 IM in 1:57.21.
On the women's side freshman Aleksandra Grubic (Split, Croatia) and senior Eden Payabyab (College Point, N.Y.) each took second in two events. Grubic touched second in both the 50 free (25.01) and the 100 free (54.19), while Payabyab finished second in the 100 fly (101.35) and the 200 free (2:04.04).
"The meet was exceptional after a difficult week of training," head coach Patrice Back said. "I thought they raced very well, we came out with a bunch of best times. We are pretty psyched in the direction the team is going."
The Bearcats host their first meet of the season on Saturday at the Patricia A. Saunders Aquatic Center in the West Gym, the meet starts at noon.
