VESTAL, N.Y. - In front of a boisterous alumni crowd of more than 200, Binghamton broke four pool records but both the men and women were defeated by America East opponent UMBC. The Retrievers won the men's meet, 155-114, and the women's meet, 164-124. Both Binghamton's men and women are 2-2 on the season.
For Binghamton, senior Chris McGuire (Essex, England) lowered his pool records in the 100 and 200 fly events, winning each race handily. In the 200, he touched in 1:52.16 - more than two seconds ahead of the field. McGuire then captured the 100 fly in 51.90. He also swam legs on BU's winning 200 medley relay and 200 free relay.
Junior Robert Kaczynski (Tychy, Poland) also was a double winner, capturing the 100 breast (1:00.03) and the 200 breast (2:12.71). He also swam a leg on the top 200 medley relay quartet.
UMBC men (2-1) went 1-2-3 in the 1000 free, 100 back and 200 back, and built a comfortable lead before swimming exhibition for the final relay.
For the women, junior Yun Qu (Hangzhou, China) and sophomore Laura Linek (Canandaigua, N.Y.) each won two events. Qu touched first in the 100 fly (56.78) and 200 fly (2:02.63), winning the 200 race by nearly eight seconds. Qu also led off BU's winning 200 free relay. Linek captured the 50 free (24.84) and 100 free (53.31), and anchored the winning 200 free relay.
The Retrievers (3-0) swept the first three places in the 1000 free, 100 back and 500 free.
Binghamton has two meets next weekend. The men will swim at Boston College on Saturday and at New Hampshire on Sunday, while the women meet Northeastern and Princeton on Saturday and New Hampshire on Sunday.
