BU swimming & diving opens season at WNY Invitational
Slesnick wins pair of events to highlight 08-09 season opener

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Binghamton men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened up its 2008-09 season at the Western New York Invitational, hosted by the University at Buffalo.

There was no team scoring in the meet that also included men's and women's squads from Canisius, Niagara, St. Bonaventure and Binghamton.

The future looks bright as freshman Nolan Slesnick captured a pair of individual events to highlight the men's efforts. Slesnick touched first in the 500 freestyle (4:43.95) and 1000 free (9:52.55), while claiming second in the 200 fly (2:00.85), 400 IM (4:09.7).

Senior Brenno Varanda churned out another impressive start with a win in the 400 IM (4:09.73), while placing third in the 500 free(4:47.79), and fourth in the 200 back (2:00.68).

Senior Andrew Palumbo and junior Philip Dzieniszewski had strong efforts in the opening meet of the season. Palumbo finished first in the 100 breast (59.81), while Dzieniszewski took first in the 50 free (21.48), and third in the 100 breast (1:00.39).

Also turning in a big performance was freshman Joe Perez-Rogers. Perez-Rogers placed second in the 100 free (48.12) and the 100 back (53.11), while coming in third in the 50 free (21.97), and the 200 back (2:00.35).

The women's side was highlighted by the workhorse performace of sophomore Amanda Ciccone. She finished fourth in the 200 free (2:00.66), fifth in the 100 fly (1:00.62) and 200 IM (2:13.32), followed up by a seventh place in the 100 breast (1:11.02). She also found time to swim in the second place 200 free relay team, and third finishing 200 medley relay team (1:51.78).

Members of the 200 free relay included junior Taryn Ferrara, freshman Elizabeth Hawkins and junior Allyce Brand. Brand also placed fifth in the 50 free(25.43).

Other members of the 200 medley relay squad were sophomore Lyndsi Worthington, sophomore Brittany Detlef and sophomore Danielle Gallo.

Gallo also chalked up a fourth place in the 100 breast(1:09.37), and a ninth in the 200 breast (2:37.86).

Freshman Maria Mazzoni delivered a strong effort in her Bearcat debut placing fifth in the 200 fly (2:16.85).

The Bearcat men and women are back in action at Boston University, with UVM, Saturday, October 25.
