Binghamton men's tennis topples St. Bonaventure 6-1

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Binghamton men's tennis (6-4) won five of six singles matches and two of three doubles contests to topple St. Bonaventure (2-7) 6-1 Friday night at the Binghamton Tennis Center.

Senior captains Brian O'Connor (New Rochelle, N.Y.) and Edwin Gerard (Bayside, N.Y.) battled back from a break down to win their match at No. 1 doubles and clinch the doubles point , and then the Bearcats displayed their strength at the bottom half of the lineup to seal the victory.

"It was an impressive performance," head coach Michael Starke said. "I thought we played very well. We picked up the momentum with the doubles point and looked strong in singles."

O'Connor and Gerard trailed 5-3 before engineering back-to-back breaks en route to a 9-7 doubles win. Then in singles, O'Connor defeated his opponent at No. 3, 7-6 (3), 6-2 to improve to 13-4 overall.

Sophomore Mark Piro (Clifton Park, N.Y.) was the first player off the court after a decisive 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 6. Piro raised his overall record to 10-4 on the season.

Binghamton next plays at Colgate on Sunday at 1 p.m.
