Binghamton men's tennis battles past Colgate 5-2

HAMILTON, N.Y. - Binghamton men's tennis (7-4) displayed its singles depth in a solid 5-2 victory over Colgate Sunday afternoon - the team's third consecutive win. The Bearcats captured the doubles point and then won four of six singles matches - sweeping positions three through six.

Senior captains Brian O'Connor (New Rochelle, N.Y.) and Edwin Gerard (Bayside, N.Y.) teamed for a 9-8 tiebreak win at first doubles and then won their singles matches at No. 3 and No. 6 respectively. The pair staved off a match point in their doubles victory on a Gerard volley winner and then O'Connor fought off three match points in his three-set singles victory.

"It was a very tough match," head coach Michael Starke said. "Number one doubles played a magnificent tiebreaker to give us the doubles point and we gutted out the singles wins on a difficult indoor surface."
