BU men's tennis standout Vloedgraven No. 1 player in Northeast
Junior is atop ITA regional rankings after exceptional fall season

ITA Regional Rankings

VESTAL, N.Y. -- After a brilliant fall season, Binghamton junior Sven Vloedgraven has earned the top ranking in the Northeast in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midseason Rankings, released yesterday. Vloedgraven's top spot represents the highest regional ranking of any BU player in nine years of Division I competition. Oddly however, Vloedgraven did not appear in the computer- generated ITA National Rankings, which included just one player from the Northeast.

Vloedgraven capped a remarkable fall season by advancing to the ITA National Indoor Championship - the first Bearcat to accomplish the feat. He qualified by capturing the ITA Northeast Regional title and was among the nation's elite at the national event, hosted by Yale on November 5-8.

Vloedgraven, the reigning America East Player of the Year and America East Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year, went 13-5 in the fall with four of the defeats coming at the hands of nationally-ranked opponents. He also placed fourth at the University of Virginia Classic and went 8-4 in doubles with partner Gilbert Wong. The pair were ranked No. 10 in the Northeast doubles.

Vloedgraven will lead the Bearcats into the spring season on January 23-24 at the Army Invitational. Binghamton will be striving for its sixth America East title in the last eight years when the conference tournament begins on April 30.
