BU men's tennis opens season at Virginia Invitational
Newcomer Dietz wins three matches to reach singles final


CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Binghamton University men's tennis opened its fall season with a solid showing at the University of Virginia Fall Invitational over the weekend at the Snyder Tennis Center.

Four Bearcats competed in the singles and doubles draws with junior Sebastian Dietz (Leun, Germany) enjoying the most success. Dietz was runnerup in the "Green" singles bracket, winning three matches, including a 7-6, 6-1 upset of top-seeded Benny Althaus of Denver. He then dispatched James Dwyer (Penn State), 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Dietz rolled to a 6-3, 7-5 win over Aaron Carpenter of Duke. In the finals, second-seeded Paul Koenke (Boise State) knocked off Dietz 6-4, 7-5.

Other Bearcats to win singles matches were senior Faisal Mohamed (Lynbrook) and freshman Andreas Danielsson (Onsala, Sweden). Mohamed won his opening match in the "Orange" draw, posting a 6-2, 7-6 (4) win over Brandon Ogara of Penn. After losing his opening match in the "Gray" singles draw, Danielsson posted a 7-6, 6-3 win in the consolation bracket.

Binghamton next competes at the Princeton Invitational on September 21-23.
