Field Championships

BOSTON,
Mass.-- Freshman Cazal
Arnett (Jamaica, N.Y.) won a pair of individual events
and was named the Men's Rookie of the Year, highlighting a record-breaking
day for Binghamton at the final day of the America East Conference
Indoor Track & Field Championships. The men's finished a
program-best second out of nine teams while the women finished
seventh. In addition, head coach Mike
Thompson and his staff were selected as the America East
Men's Staff of the Year for the first time.
Arnett recorded two of the Bearcats' first-place finishes on
Saturday. He broke his own school records in the 200 (21.72)
and 400 (47.80) and qualified for the IC4A Championship in the
process. Arnett set the old marks of 21.83 and 48.21 in the preliminaries
on Friday night. Freshman Christian
Smith (Trumansburg, N.Y.), meanwhile captured the 500
with a school record and IC4A-qualifying time of 1:04.81. The
old mark of 1:05.61 was set by Jimmy Massar last season.
Binghamton also broke a pair of school records in the distance
events. Sophomore Chris
Gaube (Vestal, N.Y.) finished fourth in the 3,000 with
a time of 8:26.15. The previous mark of 8:34.6 was set by Kurt
Kroener in 1983. Freshman Casey
Quaglia (Bangor, Maine) placed fifth with in the mile
with a time of 4:16.47. In the process, he shattered his week-old
record of 4:20.01.
Other top men's finishers were graduate student Mike
Wlodarski (Syracuse, N.Y.) and freshman Jesse
Thompson (Bay Shore, N.Y.), who placed second and third
respectively in the 1,000. Their times were 2:30.94 and 2:31.43.
Junior Justin
Halleck (Depew, N.Y.) was third in the weight throw.
On
the women's side, senior Keisha
Short (Yephank, N.Y.) was the Bearcats' top finisher,
placing fourth in the 400 (57.57).
Binghamton heads to the ECAC/IC4A Championships on Boston March
7-8.
NOTES: Binghamton's previous best finish at an America
East Track & Field Championship was third in the 2006 Outdoor
Meet.
