Johnson wins two events at Cornell Indoor Track Relays

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Freshman Dayna Johnson (Brentwood, N.Y.) made the most of her first collegiate track meet, winning the women's long jump and triple jump event at the Cornell Relays on Saturday. The meet marked the first competition for the Binghamton track and field teams this season. There was no team scoring.

Johnson's winning distances were 17-8 in the long jump and 38-1.5 in the triple jump. She also placed fourth overall in the 500 (1:18.42) and joined sophomore Karisa Heisler (Lansing, N.Y.), freshman Jessica Picha (Shoreham, N.Y.) and freshman Nakita Burke (Windsor, N.Y.) to place third in the 1600 relay (4:05.10).

Also on the women's side, senior Willa Payne (Sidney, N.Y.) was second in the 60 hurdles (9.48) and fellow senior Lindsay Warren (Lansing, N.Y.) was second in the pole vault (10-6).

On the men's side, sophomore Rory Quiller (West Point, N.Y.) won the 60 hurdles and in the process, set a new school record with a time of 8.31. Current senior Neil Case (West Winfield, N.Y.) set the previous record of 8.40 last season.

Junior Luke Shafer (Penfield, N.Y.) tied the school record in the high jump with a height of 6-9. He finished second in that event and met the qualifying standard for the IC4A Indoor Championships, which will be held March 5-6 in Boston. Three other athletes in Binghamton have jumped 6-9, the most recent of which was current senior Nick Tillman (Binghamton, N.Y.) last season.

Also qualifying for the IC4A meet was junior Paddy Hennessy (Selkirk, N.Y.) in the 35 lb. weight throw. He won the event with a distance of 56-11.

Both teams return to action on Jan. 16 at the Albany Great Dane Classic, which will be held at the New York City Armory.
