Murnane helps set two school records as track team compete at the Albany Great Dane Classic

WEST POINT, N.Y.--Sophomore Kathryn Murnane (Rockville Center, N.Y./ Oceanside) helped break two school records as the Binghamton track & field teams competed at the Binghamton track and field teams competed at the Albany Great Dane Classic this past weekend. The women finished fourth out of 11 teams with 75.5 points while the men were eighth with 35.83 points. Northeastern won the men's meet with 167 points while Albany won the women's meet with 128.45 points.

Murnane won the mile with a time of 5:08.08, eclipsing the old school record of 5:21.5. She has now won the mile in each of the past two meets. In the 4x800, Murnane, freshman Mary Tursi (Staten Island, N.Y./ St. John Villa), junior Ashley Cornelius (Endwell, N.Y./ Maine-Endwell) and sophomore Joy Romulus (Washington, N.Y./ Washington) finished third with a school-record time of 9:27.09. They blew away the old mark of 9:45.18.

Romulus and Tursi also fared well in their individual events. In the 800, Romulus was fifth in a time of 2:18.45 while Tursi was fourth in the 1000 (3:06.74). Sophomore Erica Angel (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./ Spackenkill) was third in the 3000 (10:36.92) while junior Lindsay Bohrer-Yardley (Oneida, N.Y./ Vernon-Verona Sherril) was fourth in the same event (10:38.44).

"This was the best performance by the women's team I have seen in the last five years," head coach Mike Thompson said. "Kathryn is a very tough runner. She not only has the talent, but works hard in practice and competes well every single week."

In the sprint events, junior Heather Tassler (Hartsdale, N.Y./ Woodlands) was third in the 200 (25.81) and eighth in the 55 (7.52). In the field events, junior Monisha Mealing (North Bay Shore, N.Y./Brentwood) was second in the triple jump (36-07.75) and seventh in the long jump (17-02.75). Sophomore Jaime Stitt (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) was third in the pole vault (10-10) while junjior Lindsay Warren (Lansing, N.Y./ Lansing) tied for fourth (10-4). Senior Patti Hong (Great Neck, N.Y./ Great Neck South) was fifth in the high jump (5-01).

On the men's side, freshman Rory Quiller (West Point, N.Y./ James I. Oneill) captured the pole vault with a height of 15-9. Junior Mike Ksionzyk (Olean, N.Y./ Olean) tied for second in that same event (15-3). In the high jump, sophomore Luke Shafer (Penfield, N.Y./ McQuaid) tied for second (6-7) while junior Nick Tillman (Binghamton, N.Y./ Susquehanna Valley) and sophomore Adam Goldberg (New Rochelle, N.Y./ New Rochelle) tied for fourth (6-5). Freshman Rafiq Umar (Glenmont, N.Y./ Bethlehem) was sixth in the long jump while junior James Bellew (Holbrook, N.Y./ Sachem) was eighth in the triple jump.
