VESTAL, N.Y.-- Sophomore Katie Radzik (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) won the women's race for the second year in a row and freshman Chris Gaube (Vestal, N.Y.) was the top finisher in the men's race, highlighting the Binghamton cross country teams' season-opening meet at the Binghamton Invitational. In dual meet scoring, the women were defeated by Columbia (20-35) and Colgate(22-36) but topped Siena (23-32). The men's team also defeated Siena (19-44) but lost to Columbia (15-50).

Radzik placed first out of 42 runners in the women's race by covering the 5,000-meter course in 19:17.3. She came from behind in the last 200 meters to defeat Elizabeth Kennedy of Colgate by one second. With the win, Radzik has now won three races during her career at Binghamton.

Senior Mary Tursi (Staten Island, N.Y.) was Binghamton's second runner, placing 11th in a time of 20:49. Freshman Kelda Nelson (Hillsborough, N.J.) was 12th (20:50), followed by freshman Stacy Meitzler (Athens, Pa.), who placed 18th (21:27) and sophomore Jaime Schulte (Tucson, Ariz), who finished 22nd (21:47).

In the men's meet, Columbia proved to be too strong for the rest of the field, taking the first 11 spots of the 38-runner race. Paul Morris won the 8,000 event with a time of 26:21.0 but five of his teammates finished within 1.3 seconds of him.

Gaube, who graduated from nearby Vestal High School last May, was 12th overall with a time of 27:18. Fellow freshman Craig Coon (Penfield, N.Y.) placed 14th (27:42), followed by sophomore Adam Hill (Delmar, N.Y.), who was 15th (27:55), senior Jeff Herbert (Somerville, N.J.), who finished 16th (27:59) and freshman John Carroll (Ithaca, N.Y.), who was 17th (28:28).
