Plemon, DeLuca, Tucker and Marsteller cited for academic and athletic excellence

Conference Release

VESTAL, N.Y.-- Senior catcher Deannie Plemon, senior first baseman Stephanie DeLuca, junior outfielder Meghan Tucker and sophomore pitcher Rhoda Marsteller have been named to the America East Spring Academic Squad for the 2011 softball season. The Bearcats had a conference-best four of the nine spots on the team.

Plemon, who makes the squad for the second year in a row, concluded her career with a school-record 34 home runs and 122 RBI. She was named first-team all-conference for the second straight season and ranked among the top five in the America East this year with 11 home runs and 43 RBI.

DeLuca, who also makes the team for the second straight season, adds to her collection of academic honors. In April, she was named to the COSIDA/Capital One First-Team All-District Squad. She is a two-year starter and has 12 home runs and 49 RBI during that span.

Tucker is a first-time selection. She has earned second-team all-conference honors the past two seasons and was named to the America East All-Tournament Team last month. She tied for third on the team this year with six home runs and was third with 23 RBI.

Marsteller was also named to the America East All-Tournament Team after going 1-1 with a 1.02 ERA in 13.1 innings of work in three games. For the season, Marsteller led Binghamton with 10 wins and 117.1 innings pitched.

"We are very happy to have all four players on the Spring Academic Squad," head coach Michelle Burrell said. "They have each worked hard both on and off the field this year and deserve a lot of credit."

Of the remaining five Spring Academic Squad softball selections, Albany had two picks while Boston and Maine had one player each. Over the past two seasons, Binghamton has also posted a conference-best six total picks to the America East Spring Academic Squad.

In the classroom, all nominees must have a 3.30 GPA and have completed at least one calendar year at their institution. Freshmen are not eligible for consideration.

Binghamton concluded the 2011 season with a record of 23-23 (10-7 AE). The Bearcats return six position players and their entire pitching staff in 2012.
