BU softball team tabbed fourth in America East Preseason Poll
Bearcats return six starters and three pitchers from last season's 24-19 squad

Conference Release
2011 Binghamton Schedule

VESTAL, N.Y.-- The America East Conference has released its annual preseason softball poll and Binghamton has been picked fourth. The Bearcats received one first-place vote and finished just three points out of second place overall. The voting was done by the seven conference head coaches.

Two-time defending champion Boston University received all six possible first-place votes (teams were not allowed to vote for themselves) and garnered 36 points overall. Albany was second (25 points), followed by Stony Brook (23), Binghamton (22) and Maine (21). Hartford (13) and UMBC (seven) rounded out the poll.

Heading into the season, the Bearcats return six starter position players, three pitchers and 11 letterwinners from the 2010 squad that finished a game and a half away from their first trip to the conference tournament. Binghamton ranked second in the conference with 4.9 runs per game and a .273 batting average.

Senior catcher Deannie Plemon and sophomore outfielder Jessica Phillips are the top returnees this year. Plemon was named first-team all-conference and second-team all-region after batting .376 with 14 home runs and 43 RBI in 2010. Phillips, last season's America East Rookie of the Year, belted 15 home runs and hit .345 en route to earning second-team all-conference honors and first-team all-region accolades.

Also returning this season are junior outfielder Meghan Tucker and junior pitcher Kristen Emerling, both of whom earned second-team all-conference honors last season. Sophomore pitcher Rhoda Marsteller joined Phillips on the 2010 America East All-Rookie team.

Rounding out the starting position players are senior first baseman Stephanie DeLuca, a co-captain along with Plemon, junior third baseman Colleen Whitaker and junior second baseman Briana Andrews. Sophomore Kate Price is the other returning pitcher.

Joining the Bearcats this season are nine freshman.

Binghamton launches its 2011 season at the Stetson (Fla.) Tournament on March 4. It will mark the Bearcats' 10th season as a Division I program and as a member of the America East Conference.
