Plemon and Andrews named to America East All-Rookie Softball Team
VESTAL, N.Y.-- Freshman catcher Deannie Plemon (Irvine, Calif.) and freshman infielder Bri Andrews (Endicott, N.Y.) have each been named to the America East All-Rookie Softball Team. It marks the first time since joining the America East in 2002 that the Bearcats have landed two players on the All-Rookie Team.
Plemon, who was named the America East Conference Rookie of the Week on March 4, belted a team-high five home runs and finished the season with 22 RBI. She started 43 of 44 games this season, including 41 at catcher. In the process, she threw out 13 would-be base stealers.
"Deannie is a future leader on our team," head coach Ali Brian said. "She has solid mechanics and overacheived defensively this year. Offensively this season, we saw just a glimpse of what she can do in the future.
Before suffering a season-ending injury on April 17, Andrews had hit safely in 10 out of the last 12 games. She hit three home runs and against America East Conference opponents, she was hitting a team-best .343.
"Bri was a clutch hitter for us during the time that she played," Brian said. "She has tremendous potential and had tremendous passion on the field."
Binghamton returns six of its eight position players in 2009 as well as all four pitchers.
"If everyone stays healthy, we feel very good about where the team will be next year," Brian said.
