Bearcats drop doubleheader at Albany, 3-2 and 2-1

Albany 3, Binghamton 2
Albany 2, Binghamton 1

ALBANY, N.Y.--League-leading Albany (30-15, 15-1 America East) scored a pair of one-run softball wins over visiting Binghamton (16-20-2, 7-8-1 AE) Saturday afternoon, winning 3-2 and 2-1.

In the opener, Albany scored twice in the bottom of the first inning and led throughout. Andrea Lindgren struck out nine BU batters and scattered seven hits for her 16th win of the season. Senior catcher Jessica Chellis (Tunkhannock, Pa.) belted a solo home run to lead off the second inning - her fifth of the season. The Bearecats had the tying run on first with one out in the seventh, but a strikeout and groundout ended the game. Sophomore shortstop Rose Barre (Watertown, N.Y.) went 2-for-3, and junior left fielder Marisa DeStasio (Bethlehem, Pa.) drove in BU's other run with a fifth-inning single.

In game two, senior Michelle Weeks (Bunnell, Fla.) struck out 10 batters and walked none, but Albany rallied for the 2-1 win with runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Clinging to a 1-0 lead in the sixth, Weeks surrendered three hits including a two-out single that tied the game. Then in the Great Danes' final at-bat, they delivered a single followed by the game-winning double to left center. Bighamton scored its lone run on a solo home run in the fourth inning by sophomore second baseman Nicole Vitello (Olean, N.Y.). The Bearcats managed just five hits in the game.

The teams conclude their three-game series with a single game Sunday at noon.
