Binghamton softball falls to Albany 14-0 in series finale

Vestal, N.Y. - Albany's Gina Mason hit a grand slam in the first inning and that was all the runs that the Great Danes (28-10, 9-3 AE) would need to knock off Binghamton (5-29, 0-14 AE) 14-0 and complete the weekend series sweep on Sunday at the East Gym Field. Binghamton is currently on a nine-game skid.

Albany posted four runs in the first, six in the second and four in the third to build up the 14-0 early lead.

Leah McIntosh and Marissa Powell combined on the five-inning shutout, totaling eight strikeouts and only giving up three hits. McIntosh was the pitcher of record and improved to 16-1 on the season.

Megan Butsch was solid at the plate for Albany, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored.

Junior Cyrilla Suker took the loss for Binghamton, falling to 2-13 on the season. Freshman Kristen Emerling pitched 3.2 innings of relief, striking out five and allowing just two earned runs.

Sophomore Kelly Schuldt was 2-for-2 and sophomore Deannie Plemon had BU's third hit.

Binghamton will host Colgate in a doubleheader on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. before completed its season series with UMBC at home on Wednesday. The Colgate doubleheader is a part of the "Think Pink Campaign" to promote breast cancer awareness and the Bearcats will don pink uniforms.
