shuts down strong Central Florida team 1-0
ORLANDO, Fla. - Sophomore pitcher Michelle Weeks (Bunnell, Fla./Flager Palm Coast) celebrated a return to her home state by tossing a two-hit shutout as Binghamton (3-4) defeated host Central Florida (17-13) Wednesday at CFU's Spring Fling.
Weeks struck out seven and allowed only one baserunner to reach second base in seven innings of work. The Bearcats, meanwhile, plated the game's lone run in the fourth inning. Junior catcher Jessica Chellis (Tunkhannock, Pa.) ripped an RBI single that scored freshman shortstop Rose Barre (Watertown, N.Y./General Brown) from third. Barre had singled to start the inning.
The win was significant, as the Golden Knights are 30 games into their season, and were coming off a win over perrenial power Fresno State.
"I can't emphasize how huge this was," BU head coach Holly Brown said.
The Bearcats wind up action in Orlando with games against Bucknell and Central Florida on Thursday before heading back to Binghamton.
