Weeks fires sixth complete-game shutout of the season as softball team splits doubleheader with Colgate

For the second time in two days, sophomore pitcher Michelle Weeks (Bunnell, Fla./ Flagler Palm Coast) pitched a complete-game shutout, leading Binghamton (12-11) to a split against Colgate (17-10) in a home softball doubleheader against Colgate on Wednesday. The Bearcats won the first game 1-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning before dropping the second game 5-0.

After shutting out Albany on Tuesday, Weeks (7-2) held the Red Raiders to just three hits while striking out eight batters and not allowing a walk. It marked her sixth complete-game shutout of the season and lowered her ERA to a microscopic 1.10. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the seventh inning when junior catcher Jessica Chellis (Tunkhannock, Pa.) led off with a double. After reaching third on a sacrifice bunt by senior third baseman Jen Richardson (Wellsville, N.Y.), Chellis beat the tag on a fielder's choice hit by sophomore infielder Sam Ackerman (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./ John Jay) to give the Bearcats the 1-0 win. Despite holding the Bearcats to just three hits, junior pitcher Elena Issac (8-5) took the loss for the Red Raiders.

Things were different, however, in the second game as Colgate drilled a pair of home runs off of freshman pitcher Katie Hansen (Westtown, N.Y./ Minisink Valley) to take a 3-0 lead after two innings. Sophomore outfielder Dorothy Donaldson hit a two-run home run off the right field foul pole in the first inning while junior catcher Stacy Mui led off the second inning with a solo home run to right field. Freshman pitcher Kate Howard and freshman pitcher Erica Nesselroad combined to hold the Bearcats to just four hits. Howard (9-5) got the win while Hansen (0-5) took the loss.

Binghamton travels to Hartford for a four-game series against the Hawks, starting Saturday at noon.

Game 1: Binghamton 1, Colgate 0
Game 2: Colgate 5, Binghamton 0
