Cornell sweeps softball doubleheader from Binghamton, 6-4 and 3-2

Game 1: Cornell 6, Binghamton 4
Game 2: Cornell 3, Binghamton 2

ITHACA, N.Y.--Senior shortstop Lauren May went 5-for-8, drove in six runs and scored in the bottom of each of the seventh innings to help Cornell (28-17-1) sweep Binghamton (10-25) in an non-conference softball doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at the Niemand•Robison field. The Big Red won the opener 6-4 and the nightcap 3-2.

In the opening game, with Cornell down 4-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning the Bearcats looked as if they were going to take the first game from the Big Red. Then May stepped to the plate, with the bases loaded and one out she hit walk-off grand slam to give Cornell the 6-4 win.

Chrissy Semon (Clarks Summit, Pa.) went 2-3 with a triple and 2 RBIs in the game. Freshman Meghan Quinn (Middleburg, N.Y.) had a home run in the game as well.

Freshman pitcher Jenn Meunier improved her record to 17-4 while junior pitcher
Katie Hansen (Westtown, N.Y.) took the loss, dropping her record to 6-11.

In the second game, senior first baseman
Marybeth Yerdon (Lacona, N.Y.). had a double in the fourth inning scoring junior second baseman Nicole Vitello (Olean, N.Y.) to tie the game up at 2-2. In the bottom of seventh with the score still knotted at 2-2 and nobody out, May scored from third on an infield single by Samantha Hare to win the game for the Big Red.

Junior pitcher Whitney Smith improved her record to 10-9 while freshman pitcher junior pitcher
Patty Egan (Sierra Vista, Ariz.) took the loss and is now 3-9 for the season.

Binghamton plays its final series of the season at Vermont in a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. and a single game on Sunday at noon.
