Binghamton softball gains doubleheader split at Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y.-- Senior catcher Mia Bieman (Wingham, Ontario) homered twice, leading Binghamton (7-29) to a doubleheader split in non-conference softball action on Tuesday afternoon at Nieman-Robison Field. The Bearcats lost the opener 9-8 before taking the nightcap 7-5.
Bieman delivered a three-run home run in the fourth inning of the second game to put Binghamton ahead 3-1. Senior designated hitter Christina Quijano (Syracuse, N.Y.) drilled a two-run triple in the fifth inning and drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth inning, increasing the lead to 6-1.
Cornell got two runs back in the bottom of the sixth inning but junior third baseman Megan Quinn (Temecula, Calif) scored on a wild pitch of the top of the seventh inning, increaing the lead to 7-3.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, junior outfielder Jenna Camagnolo belted a two-out, two-run home run, narrowing the Bearcat lead to 7-5. Sophomore Cyrilla Suker (Vooreheesville, N.Y.), however, got the final out of the game one batter later.
The Bearcats were down 7-1 in the first game but Bieman led off the top of the fourth inning with a home run. Later in the same frame, senior outfielder Stephanie Woodcock (Harpursville, N.Y.) drilled a two-run double and eventually scored on a single by Suker , closing the gap to 7-5. The final run occured when senior outfielder Sara Eppolito (Manlius, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Cornell, however, got an important insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning and held the Bearcats scoreless the last two innings.
Binghamton heads to Colgate for a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Thursday.
