VESTAL, N.Y. -- Senior Stephanie Valencia hit two triples and a home run on a 5-for-7 day, but the Binghamton softball team (24-19) dropped a pair of games to Cornell (35-12) 7-2, 7-5 in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon.

Valencia 2-for-3 with a triple, RBI and run scored in the opener before going 3-for-4 with a triple, home run four RBI and two runs scored in the nightcap. Valencia and classmate Shannon McLeese were honored in BU's annual senior day ceremony.

Cornell tallied three runs in each of the first two innings in their 7-2 game one victory. The Big Red tallied nine hits over the first two frames to jump out to the 6-0 lead.

BU mustered two runs in the sixth when Valencia tripled in freshman Jessica Phillips and was later plated by junior Deannie Plemon's RBI single.

Cornell's Erin Keene had three hits in the opener and Devon March drove in three runs.

Phillips was 2-for-3 with a double in game one for the Bearcats.

Binghamton's Kristen Emerling and Cornell's Lauren Marx dueled to a scoreless 0-0 tie after three innings, but the Big Red plated a pair in the fourth and two more in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead.

BU's bats responded in the fifth with three runs to get back into the game. Valencia smashed a two-run triple to deep right and junior Stephanie DeLuca would later drive in Valencia.

Cornell added a single run in the sixth and two more in the seventh to extend their lead to 7-3. Binghamton's final runs came on a two-run homer by Valencia in the bottom of the seventh to draw the Bearcats to a 7-5 deficit.

Plemon added two hits in the nightcap while Cornell's Ali Tomlinson and Morgan Cawley each ripped three hits.

Binghamton will make the America East postseason tournament if UMBC sweeps Albany this weekend.
