Binghamton softball drops pair of games at Day One of Norfolk State Dixie Classic

NORFOLK, Va.-- Binghamton (0-7) lost a pair of games at the first day of the Norfolk State Softball Dixie Classic. The Bearcats were defeated 5-2 by Marist and 7-1 by the host Spartans.

In the opener, Marist went up 5-0 through the middle of the fifth inning. The Bearcats trimmed the lead to 5-2 through six innings but could get no closer. Senior catcher
Mia Bieman (Wingham, Ontario) went 2-for-4 while freshman pitcher Nicole Constantatos (Commack, N.Y.) and senior shortstop Emilie Palmcrantz (Leksand, Sweden) each drove in a run.

In the game against Norfolk State, freshman pitcher Alyssa Velazquez scattered one run on three hits and struck out five batters. Offensively, the Spartans broke the game open with a four-run second inning and were up 7-0 through six innings. The lone Bingamton response was a RBI single by Bieman in the top of the seventh inning.

Bieman with 3-for-7 in both games.

Binghamton faces Delaware (11 a.m.) and Cornell (3 p.m.) on Saturday in the second day of the Dixie Classic.
