WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Binghamton softball team (4-5) rebounded from Saturday's two defeats by going 2-0 on the final day of the Colonials Classic. The Bearcats beat Canisius 1-0, before downing Army 5-3.

"Both Kristen [Emerling] and Rhoda [Marsteller] had a great performance on the mound and they both did a really good job of keeping Canisus off the bases," head coach Michelle Burrell said. "And in the Army game we did a much better job of putting hits together and getting runners across."

Binghamton 1, Canisius 0

Sophomore Kristen Emerling and freshman Rhoda Marsteller combined for a four-hit shutout of Canisius (8-9) to begin the day. Emerling earned the victory and pitched the first five innings, while Marsteler came in for the final two and picked up the save.

The only run of the game came from the bat of junior Deannie Plemon in the form of a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning.

Marsteller allowed no hits in her two innings and Emerling struck out four.

Canisius' Amanda Baun was the tough-luck loser in the circle. She scattered six hits, struck out 12 and walked none, but the home run to Plemon proved to be the difference.

Binghamton 5, Army 3

Binghamton capitalized on two Army (0-3) errors in the top of the fifth by plating both sophomore Meghan Tucker and senior Stephanie Valencia to take a 2-0 lead. Army got their first run in the bottom of the frame on a solo home run from Angela Degler.

In the following inning Binghamton struck again when junior Kelly Schuldt singled in freshman Jessica Phillips.

Taking a 3-1 lead into the final inning, Binghamton was able to manufacture some much needed insurance runs on a two-on, two-out double by Plemon to push the lead to 5-1.

Army notched on two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Marsteller struck out the would-be winning run to end the game.

Marsteller threw her fourth complete game of the season and improves her record to 3-2. She allowed only one earned run and struck out six. Plemon was 2-for-4 with two RBI.

On the day, Plemon was 3-for-7 with three RBI and Marsteller pitched nine innings and allowed only one earned run.

BU will return to action at the Norfolk State Invite on Saturday.
