FARMVILLE, Va. -- Sophomore outfielder Shannon Kane went 3-for-7 with two runs and a pair of RBI while sophomore outfielder Jessica Phillips went 3-for-5 and scored twice, highlighting Binghamton's doubleheader split in a non-conference softball doubleheader at Lancer Field on Thursday afternoon. The Bearcats (18-15) were shut out by the Lancers (28-11) 8-0 in five innings before winning the finale 11-9 in eight innings.

Kane, who was the lone Bearcat to record a hit in both games, played a pivotal role in the top of the eighth inning of the second game. The two teams were deadlocked at 7-7 through seven innings but the Bearcats reeled off four runs in the first extra inning. Kane singled in the second run during that frame and scored one batter later on a base hit by Phillips.

Down 11-7 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Longwood cut the deficit in half on a two-run, inside-the-park home run by Kami Nuckols. The Lancers, however, left the tying runs on base when the game ended three outs later.

After going 0-for-2 in the opener, Phillips reached base all five times in the second game. In addition to hitting three singles, she also drew a pair of walks and drove in a run. Including the two games against Longwood, Phillips is batting a team-best .505 this season and has a team-best 39 RBI.

Senior first baseman Stephanie DeLuca went 2-for-4 in the nightcap and had a team-high three RBI. Freshman designated hitter Mikala King finished the second game 2-for-5 and also drove in a run.

Sophomore pitcher Rhoda Marsteller got the win and is now 7-8. Briana Wells took the loss and is now 25-11.

Unlike the second game, Wells was in total control in the opener. She pitched the first 4.1 innings, allowing only a first-inning single to Kane.

Offensively, Maggie Margadonna and Brooke Short each went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run. They both scored a pair of runs as did Nichole Simmons.

Wells and Marsteller were also the pitchers of record in game one.

Binghamton returns home to face Maine in a three-game America East Conference series. The two squads are scheduled to play a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday and a single game at noon on Sunday.

NOTES: Kane now has seven multiple-hit and a pair of multiple-RBI games this season. DeLuca has eight multiple-hit games this year and five multiple-RBI performances ... senior catcher Deannie Plemon belted her team-high 11th double in the second game. She now has 29 career doubles which ties Jessica Chellis (2001-04) for the second-highest total by a Binghamton player at the Division I level. Rose Barre (2002-06) ranks first with 31 career doubles during the Division I era while Jamie Pier (1997-00) ranks first all time in program history with 44 career doubles ... Phillips now has 47 hits this season, one off her total from last season and three behind the program's NCAA Division I record of 50 shared by Plemon (2010) and Barre (2006). Mollie Lehman holds the program's all-time single-season mark of 55 hits during the 1997 campaign ... Longwood is an independent team competing at the NCAA Division I level.
