Meredith Nelles hired as Binghamton assistant softball coach
VESTAL, N.Y.-- The Binghamton softball program has announced the hiring of Meredith Nelles as its new assistant softball coach. She joins a staff under the leadership of first-year head coach Michelle Burrell.
A 2009 graduate of the University of Maryland, Nelles was the top pitcher for the Terps from 2006-08. As a freshman in 2006, she ranked sixth in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) with 8.4 strikeouts per game. The following season, she led Maryland in innings pitched, strikeouts (141) and recorded 19 wins (the third most in school history).
In 2008, Nelles was 10-3 and led the Terps with 83 strikeouts, four shutouts and a 2.17 ERA. In the classroom that year, she was named to ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-District Team.
In 2009, Nelles was the lead softball instructor for individual pitching and hitting lessons at the Thunder Stix Baseball and Softball Academy (based in New Castle, Del.). From 2002-08, she was also an individual pitching coach.
"I am really excited about the addition of Meredith to our staff," Burrell said. "She is going to bring a lot of expertise in the entire game and especially with pitching."
"I want to thank Michelle for the opportunity to come and work here," Nelles said. "It's exciting for me to put some of my playing and coaching experience together at such a great level of competition."
