Binghamton softball loses two on first day of Spartan Clash

Norfolk State 4, Binghamton 0
Delaware State 7, Binghamton 3 (8 innings)

NORFOLK, Va. - Binghamton (2-4) dropped two games on the first day of Norfolk State's Spartan Clash on Saturday, losing to the host Spartans 4-0 before dropping an eight-inning game to Delaware State 7-3. Binghamton stayed competitive late into each game but allowed their opponents to break the game wide open in the late innings.

Junior pitcher Alyssa Velazquez threw the complete game shutout for Norfolk State (6-5), striking out five and walking only one batter. The Spartans led the Bearcats 1-0 in the sixth before plating three runs in the bottom of the inning to break it open.

Binghamton suffered a similar fate in its game against Delaware State (5-2). After tying the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh, BU allowed five runs in the top of the eighth, letting the Hornets pull away.

Trailing 2-1 in their last ups, senior Sandy Meadows singled and then eventually scored on a throwing error by the Norfolk State defense to knot the game at 2-2 and force extra innings.

Norfolk scored its five runs on three hits in the top of the seventh.

Junior Cyrilla Suker pitched all eight innings for Binghamton striking out 10 batters.
Meadows was 4-for-8 on the day and extended her hitting streak to nine games.

The Bearcats will take on Colgate at 11 a.m. tomorrow and will finish their weekend by playing in either the championship or consolation game.
