CAMBRIDGE, MASS. -- Freshman Rhoda Marsteller was named the America East softball Rookie of the Week for the week ending March 21, the conference office announced today. Marsteller was 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA last week and helped lead Binghamton (8-5) to its first ever Division I in-season tournament championship.
"Rhoda worked extremely hard in the fall and her preparation is paying off," head coach Michelle Burrell said. "She had a fantastic weekend. It is hard to tell she is a freshman because she carries herself so well on the mound."
Marsteller first earned a complete game victory over Atlantic 10-member Rhode Island 3-1 on Saturday. Marsteller struck out 10 batters while only walking one. The only run she gave up was unearned, and came in an inning that BU had two fielding errors.
The freshman was handed the ball against St. Francis (Pa.) in the championship game of the Delaware State Invite on Sunday. Marsteller responded by pitching five scoreless innings, giving up only one hit, and leaving the game with a 7-0 lead.
On the season Marsteller is 5-2 with 1.30 ERA. She has helped guide BU to its current program record six-game win streak and the team has already surpassed the win total of the 2009 squad (7-36).
The Bearcats will play a doubleheader at Marist on Thursday before beginning America East play with a three-game set at Albany this weekend.
