BU softball loses season opener 5-4 to Elon in nine innings
Plemon drills three-run homer but Phoenix rallies for victory

Box score: Elon 5, Binghamton 4 (9 innings)

DELAND, Fla.-- Hannah Shelton scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning, leading Elon (10-2) to a 5-4 walkoff win over Binghamton (0-1) in the opening day of the Stetson (Fla.) Softball Tournament. The game marked the start of the Bearcats' 10th season as a NCAA Division I program.

Shelton was placed on second base to start the ninth inning, in accordance with the international tie-breaking rule. She advanced to third base on a bunt and scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Emerald Graham.

Earlier in the game, the Bearcats rallied from a 3-0 deficit by scoring four runs in the top of the top of the sixth inning. Sophomore outfielder Meghan Tucker led off the inning with a home run and with one out, senior catcher Deannie Plemon drilled a three-run home run.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, however, Graham deadlocked the game on a two-out single.

Binghamton's second game of the day, against host Stetson, was cancelled due to the weather.
