BU softball loses season opener 5-4 to Elon in nine innings
drills three-run homer but Phoenix rallies for victory

DELAND, Fla.-- Hannah Shelton
scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning, leading
Elon (10-2) to a 5-4 walkoff win over Binghamton (0-1) in the
opening day of the Stetson (Fla.) Softball Tournament. The game
marked the start of the Bearcats' 10th season as a NCAA Division
Shelton was placed on second base to start the ninth inning,
in accordance with the international tie-breaking rule. She advanced
to third base on a bunt and scored the winning run on a sacrifice
fly by Emerald Graham.
Earlier in the game, the Bearcats rallied from a 3-0 deficit
by scoring four runs in the top of the top of the sixth inning.
Sophomore outfielder Meghan
Tucker led off the inning with a home run and with one out,
senior catcher Deannie
Plemon drilled a three-run home run.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, however, Graham deadlocked
the game on a two-out single.
Binghamton's second game of the day, against host Stetson, was
cancelled due to the weather.
