Bearcats drop doubleheader at UMBC, 5-4 and 3-2

UMBC 5, Binghamton 4
UMBC 3, Binghamton 2

BALTIMORE, Md.--Host UMBC (24-29, 2-12 America East) rallied to win both games and complete a doubleheader sweep of visiting Binghamton (16-18-2, 7-6-1 AE), 5-4 and 3-2, Wednesday afternoon. Only the first game counted in the conference standings, but with the win, the Retrievers captured the season series, 2-1. UMBC's only two conference wins have come at the expense of the Bearcats.

In the opener, BU led 3-1 before UMBC plated four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Retrievers used four hits and a pair of walks to reverse their fortunes and pin the loss on senior Michelle Weeks (Bunnell, Fla.), who struck out 12 and scattered six hits but nonetheless had to absorb her eighth loss of the season. Binghamton got one run back in the top of the seventh and had two runners on base with one out before back-to-back batters fouled out to end the game.

Offensively, sophomore shortstop Rose Barre (Watertown, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in the third inning. Senior designated player Christine Sweeney (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 with three runs scored.

In the second game, BU led 2-0 before the Retrievers tied it with two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Then in their last at-bat, the hosts won the game with a two-out, two-strike RBI double. Binghamton was outhit 10-5 for the game and went down in order in two of the last three innings. Sophomore second baseman Nicole Vitello (Olean, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in the first inning and an RBI single in the third. Freshman first baseman Christina Quijano (Syracuse, N.Y.) was 2-for-3.

Binghamton travels to Albany for a three-game America East series against the Great Danes this Saturday and Sunday.
