CAMBRIDGE, MASS. -- Binghamton's volleyball program (1-5, 0-0) earned their first award of the season Tuesday. Junior setter Julie Chambers (Nichols, N.Y./Tioga) was named America East Setter of the Week, for the week ending September 5, as announced by the conference.
"A great reward to a deserving player," head coach Glenn Kiriyama said. "Julie has put a tremendous amount of time and effort to improve and perform at a higher level. We are all glad to see her progress and growth."
For the week, Chambers led the America East with 9.26 assists per set, with a total of 103 over 11 sets. Chambers upped her season average to 9.20 assists per game, good enough for second overall in the conference.
The Bearcats traveled to Fairfield, Conn. this past weekend to take part in the Sacred Heart Invitational. In their first game of the tournament, Binghamton defeated Jacksonville 3-1. BU secured their first win of the early season behind Chambers' 36 assists, seven digs and five kills. Versus Dartmouth, Chambers produced another steady performance with a season and match-high 40 assists. In the final match of the tournament, Chambers dished out 27 assists while chipping in eight digs against host Sacred Heart.
Binghamton is on the road tomorrow night against Niagara. The match begins in Lewiston, N.Y. at 7 p.m.
