Volleyball splits pair of matches at Delaware/Asics Invitational

NEWARK, Del. --The Binghamton women's volleyball (1-2) split a pair of matches on the final day of the Delaware/Asics Invitational on Saturday. The Bearcats opened the day with a 3-0 (30-24, 30-25, 30-23) loss to host Delaware, but bounced back to sweep Boston College, 3-0 (30-21, 30-27, 32-30).
"It feels nice to get the first win under our belts," said ninth-year head coach Glenn Kiriyama. "We did a great job of controlling the match and managed to keep their hitters in check. I was pleased to finish the tournament with a strong and consistent effort."
Senior captain Kathleen Schauer (Littleton, Colo.) put down 12 kills and senior Jacki Kane (Centennial, Colo.) added a match-high nine blocks for the Bearcats, who never led by more than a point in the day's opener en route to a 3-0 match sweep at the hands of the host Blue Hens.
BU controlled the nets in its finale against Boston College, outblocking the Eagles 10-5, and forcing 34 errors. Kane delivered another standout performance finishing the match with a team-high 12 kills, hitting at a match-high clip of .393, and five blocks. She amassed a team-best 24 kills and 14 blocks over three games to earn All-Delaware Invitational honors.
Freshman Michelle McDonough (Orland Hills, Ill.) tallied nine kills and a match-high 18 digs, while junior Ashley Allen (Mill Creek, Wash.) added eight kills in the winning effort.
The Bearcats return to action next weekend at the Western New York Invitational on the campus of Canisius College in Buffalo. BU faces host Canisius on Friday evening and a pair of first-time opponents in Valparaiso and University of Wilsconsin-Milwaukee on Saturday,before closing out the weekend against St. Francis (N.Y.).
Game Notes: The Binghamton-Boston College matchup was the first in the history of the two programs...In 2005, BU swept Delaware 3-0 in the only previous meeting between the schools ...
