BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Binghamton volleyball team was tripped up by tournament-host Buffalo 3-0 at the UB Blue and White Classic Friday night. Binghamton lost 19-25, 23-25 and 11-25, marking their fifth defeat of the season in straight sets.
"We had a tough time offensively tonight," head coach Glenn Kiriyama said, "Buffalo did a good job with their blocking, taking away a lot of opportunities." "Our execution could have been better and it was a struggle throughout."
Binghamton (2-6) fell behind early in the opening frame, 6-1, forcing head coach Glenn Kiriyama to call timeout. Buffalo (7-2) extended their lead to 15-8 before the Bearcats came to life, cutting the deficit to four on a Michelle McDonough service ace. With the score, 16-12 the two teams traded jabs and BU closed the gap to one, making the score 20-19. The Bulls then rattled off five straight points to close out the first set.
Bearcats jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the second set behind back
to back kills from sophomore Alex Roland
and an ace by junior Julie Chambers.
BU extended their lead to 20-13 on several Buffalo mistakes,
going on runs 5-0 and 4-0 during the set. However, those same
mistakes haunted the Bearcats down the stretch, helping the Bulls
go on a 12-3 run and claim the second set.
The Bearcats were held to a season low .082 hitting percentage and put down just 27 kills.
Binghamton is back in action Saturday on day two of the UB Blue and White Classic. The Bearcats will face-off against the Red Storm of St. John's (10-1) at 1:30 p.m. then again versus the Hampton Lady Pirates (0-9) at 4:30 p.m.
