BU drops first match of UB Blue and White Classic
Bearcats fall to tournament-host Buffalo in straight sets

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Binghamton volleyball team was tripped up by tournament-host Buffalo 3-0 at the UB Blue and White Classic Friday night. Binghamton lost 19-25, 23-25 and 11-25, marking their fifth defeat of the season in straight sets.

"We had a tough time offensively tonight," head coach Glenn Kiriyama said, "Buffalo did a good job with their blocking, taking away a lot of opportunities." "Our execution could have been better and it was a struggle throughout."

Binghamton (2-6) fell behind early in the opening frame, 6-1, forcing head coach Glenn Kiriyama to call timeout. Buffalo (7-2) extended their lead to 15-8 before the Bearcats came to life, cutting the deficit to four on a Michelle McDonough service ace. With the score, 16-12 the two teams traded jabs and BU closed the gap to one, making the score 20-19. The Bulls then rattled off five straight points to close out the first set.

The Bearcats jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the second set behind back to back kills from sophomore Alex Roland and an ace by junior Julie Chambers. BU extended their lead to 20-13 on several Buffalo mistakes, going on runs 5-0 and 4-0 during the set. However, those same mistakes haunted the Bearcats down the stretch, helping the Bulls go on a 12-3 run and claim the second set.

In the third set, the Bearcats ran out of gas dropping the final frame, 25-11. Buffalo raced out to a 7-1 lead and continued to build on it throughout the set. BU fell behind by as many as 13 late in the set and could just not muster any offense. Buffalo finished off their sweep of Binghamton behind a hitting percentage of .452 in the final set.

Senior hitter Anna Lejina had 10 kills and freshman libero Xiomara Ortiz came up with 18 digs for the Bearcats. Chambers had a game-high 25 assists for the Bearcats while Roland chipped in 6 kills.

The Bearcats were held to a season low .082 hitting percentage and put down just 27 kills.

Binghamton is back in action Saturday on day two of the UB Blue and White Classic. The Bearcats will face-off against the Red Storm of St. John's (10-1) at 1:30 p.m. then again versus the Hampton Lady Pirates (0-9) at 4:30 p.m.
